Knowledge Management
Creating a learning environment for local authorities
Aim: By developing toolkits, processes and case studies for local authorities to access and use, the Knowledge Management project aims to foster the creation and management of an environment that encourages knowledge to be created, shared, learnt, and exploited for the benefit of the organisation and its customers.
Project outcomes: Many local authorities have introduced a variety of Knowledge Management (KM) systems within their organisations. However there is no effective and consistent KM system that can be implemented across the full range of local authorities. This project will develop a fully comprehensive range of toolkits and processes which every local authority will be able to both understand and access.
KM techniques and practices will allow local authorities to capture and re-use the experience and knowledge contained within the organisation to reduce costs, improve services and enhance interaction with communities and with other agencies.
The project has been exploring various aspects of the KM discipline to investigate what practices and techniques can usefully be applied within a local authority environment. The outputs of the project will include business cases, best practice guides, research and software to assist councils to begin to use KM within their organisation.
Project partners: The project is led by Wiltshire County Council with support from the London Boroughs of Camden, Tower Hamlets and Lewisham.
Project status: Rollout phase.
