Over 800 local government professionals attended local e-gov EXPO to learn how the National Projects could help them deliver their e-government, priority outcome and Gershon commitments in 2005 and beyond.

"The level of enthusiasm among delegates about using every tool available - including the National Projects - to help them improve the services they deliver to citizens is overwhelming," said Martin Scarfe, National Projects Programme Director.

Delegates included a large number of chief executives and elected members who participated in a lively debate on the future of e-government during the afternoon of the first day. Overall there was deep commitment to delivering on the e-government agenda but the mood was moving away from 'e' towards the people and processes that will deliver these better services.

"We feel that we are on the road to better services but there is a long way to go," added Scarfe. "But it is accepted by all that technology will underpin the process."

Day two of EXPO culminated in a plenary 'e-gov question time' session hosted by John Sergeant with Martin Scarfe, Michael Cross (Guardian e-Public), Darryl Stephenson (East Ridings), Graham Colclough (Capgemini), Dave Broster (European Commission), John Hayes (IDeA), Paul Bettison (Bracknell Forest), Chris Yapp (Microsoft) and Nigel Dutton (O2).
